At a Glance
State of the IslandSouth Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. is set to present the annual State of the Island Address Wednesday, November 7 at 5 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers, 2nd Floor, 4601 Padre Boulevard. Mayor Pinkerton will review the last fiscal year's accomplishments and propose the vision and direction for the coming year. The public is encouraged to attend.

MaintenanceThe contractor striped parking spaces on W. Retama St. Thirteen parallel parking spaces were created and a "No Parking" zone in front of the bay.

Street SignsPublic Works Department is replacing the old faded street name signs on Gulf Boulevard with new ones. They started with this project last fiscal year and should complete the project by the end of December.

Palm Street
The contractor began trimming the palm trees on the east side streets last week and started on Haas St. and should get to Retama St. by this week. He will be trimming approximately 300 palm trees per week.

Hospitality Industry MeetingOn Tuesday, October 29, the Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted the first Quarterly Hospitality Industry Meeting with our new director Lacey Ekberg. An assortment of local business people ranging from hotel management, real estate agents, magazines reps, website designers and wedding planners attended the meeting. The twenty attendees were all pleasantly surprised with the new direction sales and marking is taking for booking conventions, meetings and special events on the Island.

Come on DownCVB Director Lacey Ekberg has confirmed national television exposure with the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. We will have a chance to see contestants win trips to visit our beautiful Island! More details to follow.

Visitors CenterEveryone is invited to visit our newly remodeled Visitors Center and view our new addition to the building.

Mayor's Tribute to Veterans DayThe South Padre Island Parks, Recreation and Beautification Committee invites you to the Mayor's Tribute to Veterans Day to join South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. in recognizing all Veterans and celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday on Friday, November 9, at La Quinta Ballroom at 2 p.m. A FREE concert will be given by local talent, Leslie Blasing.

Recycle Land 2012The South Padre Island Environmental Health Services Department and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee invite everyone to bring their recyclables to Recycle Land 2012 on Saturday, November 10, at Water Tower Park (Laguna Blvd. and Huisache St.) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Organizations participating and items that will be collected are:
- City of South Padre Island - Aluminum, cardboard, newspaper, office paper, plastic, tin, phone books.
- Friends of Animal Rescue - Gently used clothes, footwear, dishes, linens, glassware, furniture, working appliances.
- FUMC Port Isabel - Non-perishable food for food pantry.
- Keep SPI Beautiful - Plant swap
- Home Depot - Light bulbs
- Sea Turtle Inc. & Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter - Outreach and education booths
- Jr's Recycling - Appliances (w/Freon), metal, car batteries, copper, aluminum, brass, transmissions, radiators.
- Art Space - Wine corks, ribbons, beads.
- GONROD Recycling LLC - Plastic, aluminum, other.
- Target - Glass
Veterans DayThe South Padre Island City Hall will be closed on Monday, November 12, in observance of Veterans Day. City Hall will open again on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at regular business hours.

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Items that can be recycled are:
- Newspaper
- Cardboard
- Office Paper
- Aluminum
- Tin
- Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
- Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
- Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.
Toastmasters Wanted
The Islanders Toastmasters International Club is now open to the public and invites all to participate and develop valuable communication and leadership skills. "The Islanders" meet every Thursday at 12:00pm at the City Hall Board Room. For more information call Vice President of Membership, Tim Howell at (956) 761-3078 or by e-mail at THowell@MySPI.org. Come and check out the Toastmasters' experience.
Animal ControlLost or found an animal on the Island? The South Padre Island's Animal Control is working together with the Friends of Animals Rescue Group. Their foster based recovery center helps to reunite lost and found pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue will make every effort to reunite lost animals with their families. Animals that are not reunited will be vetted by Friends of Animal Rescue and placed with new families. Lost or found a pet please call (956) 761-PETS.
Pet of the Week
Gretta

Gretta is a Blue Heeler that was found by an Island resident. She has not been claimed and is now up for adoption. Gretta is a loving dog that loves to go for long walk. She is spayed, up to date on shots and heart worm negative. If you are interested in meeting Gretta please stop up at Friends of Animal Rescue at 4908 Padre Blvd to meet her between the hours of 10 AM - 4 PM daily.
