At a Glance
Causeway MaintenanceAssistant City Manager Darla Jones received an update from Rex Costley with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) assuring the City that all lanes will be open starting March 1, 2013. Mr. Costley noted that the contractor would begin work underneath the Causeway after March 1, 2013. Mr. Costley will make a presentation to the City Council at the February 6, 2013 regular meeting.
Convention Centre Expansion and Renovation ProjectNeed some information or have some questions regarding the Convention Centre Expansion and Renovation Project? The City of South Padre has developed a website that contains the history, timeline, videos, upcoming events, frequently asked questions, and associated documents. Simply go to
www.myspi.org/CCInfo to find everything related to the project. If you have any questions that haven't been answer simply email them to
CCInfo@myspi.org and they will be answered promptly.
TxDOTTexas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) sent paving crews to apply a chip seal overlay on several blocks along Padre Boulevard last week. They will resume work the week of February 11, 2013 if needed.
AT&TAT&T has been installing new lines along the 6000 block of Padre Boulevard and also repairing some lines on Gulf Boulevard. They have permits from both, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Public Works and staff is monitoring the work.
Mosquito ManagementTo prevent the growth of mosquitoes larvaciding was conducted this week, and in addition, pesticide spraying of the island was performed to assist with mosquito minimization. The Environmental Health Services Department will continue to monitor both weather conditions and mosquito activity to target efforts in areas of need.
RecyclingApproximately 1000 pounds of recyclable material was turned in this past week. Thank you to every-one for doing their part in keeping South Padre Island beautiful!
SPI Senior PromBring your sweetheart to SPI's 2nd Annual Senior Prom on February 15, 2013 at La Quinta Inn & Suites from 7 PM to 11 PM. Tickets are only $10 with complimentary Hors D'oeuvres, prom picture and a cash bar. Tickets available at the SPI Chamber, Paragraphs Bookstore, and Ramada Inn. The 2nd Annual SPI Senior Prom also contains a complimentary concert with J. Micheal Laferty & Band on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Hilton Garden Inn from 1 PM to 3 PM. A very nice way to end a romantic weekend.
Oral Rabies Vaccination ProgramThe City of South Padre Island will be assisting the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Zoonosis Control Division with the Oral Rabies Vaccination Program. The program is aimed at reducing, or possibly eliminating, the dog strain of rabies carried by coyotes in Texas. On February 6, baits containing a vaccination for rabies will be distributed around the City in areas known to have coyote traffic. The baits are made of a fish meal casing with a pouch in the center that contains the rabies vaccine (pictured below). The public is urged to avoid disturbing the baits, which are clearly marked with warning signs. If a person or an animal should come in contact with the bait, please contact the SPI Environmental Health & Safety Department at (956) 761-3226 or the number imprinted on the bait for the Texas Department of Health, 1-877-732-5725.

Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Items that can be recycled are:
- Newspaper
- Cardboard
- Office Paper
- Aluminum
- Tin
- Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
- Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
- Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.
Toastmasters Wanted
The Islanders Toastmasters International Club is now open to the public and invites all to participate and develop valuable communication and leadership skills. Animal Control
Lost or found an animal on the Island? The South Padre Island's Animal Control is working together with the Friends of Animals Rescue Group. Their foster based recovery center helps to reunite lost and found pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue will make every effort to reunite lost animals with their families. Animals that are not reunited will be vetted by Friends of Animal Rescue and placed with new families. Lost or found a pet please call (956) 761-PETS.

This beautiful long hair Siamese mix was found on the Island about two weeks ago. She is loving playful and will be vetted this week and ready for her home. joining us at Paragraphs for the afternoon sharing her talents as an
illustrator and speaking about her books, including her work with young
adult author P.C. Cast as the illustrator for the book "The Fledgling
Handbook 101". This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments
will be provided.

Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo

popular Winter Texan event, the annual Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo
returns to the South Padre Island Convention Center in February.
Sponsored by St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church, the Feb. 9th
event features a live raptor show and more than 20 seminars about the
natural wonders of the Laguna Madre area and South Texas. Topics include
fly fishing, bay fishing, bird watching, dolphins, turtles, butterflies
and native plants. There will also be exhibits by non-profit
environmental and wildlife organizations. Proceeds from the event will
benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Laguna Madre. Doors open at 8
a.m. with presentations starting at 8:30 a.m. Admission is $3, and there
will be a raffle and silent auction.
